This guide is a recommendation of places to visit, eat, and see while staying at Mandala.
Food & Drinks
Alonnah & Lunawanna
- Hotel Bruny Restaurant, Pub & Bottle Shop: The closest restaurant to Mandala. Enjoy wine and dine with a great selection of weekly specials, a kids’ menu, and a children’s play area. Reservations are advised.
- Island Coffee: Serves coffee, teas, and a selection of treats. Open Monday-Tuesday 8:30 am-12:00 pm, and Thursday-Sunday 8:30 am-2:00 pm.
- Bruny Island Premium Wines & Restaurant: The only premium winery on the island, also serving great cider. They offer lunch and drinks daily from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Dinner is available on Friday and Saturday.
- Lunawanna Café: A cozy spot for coffee, teas, and easy lunches like toasties.
Adventure Bay
- Mari Bruny Cafe: The only café on the island serving breakfast, with options like bacon and egg rolls and big breakfasts. Also serves lunch and early dinner.
- Bruny Island Cruises & Seafood Restaurant: Located at the Adventure Bay Visitor Centre, this restaurant serves seafood, hot and cold drinks, and ice creams. Open for lunch.
- Bruny Island Berry Farm: Enjoy berry picking and light lunches during the season. Indulge in Tasmania’s best ice cream with berry desserts. The farm is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
- Bruny Island Chocolate Co.: A charming roadside shop offering delicious fudge, truffles, and other gourmet foods.
- Adventure Bay General Store: A comprehensive store for groceries, supplies, and frozen meats. It’s the only place on the island with a cash point/ATM and fuel station.
North Bruny
- Bruny Island Cheese & Beer Co.: Try artisan cheeses, bread, and beer. The cellar door is open daily from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. Located in Great bay.
- Get Shucked Oyster Farm & Bar: A must-visit for fresh, delicious oysters. Purchase them to go from the “drive-thru” or enjoy them at the bar. The farm is open daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Located in Great Bay.
- Bruny Island Wild at Dennes Point Cafe: This cafe serves local, seasonal food, including wood-fired pizzas on weekends. Bookings are essential.
Bruny Island House of Whiskey: A must-visit for whiskey lovers. They offer a tasting of 65 different Tasmanian single-malt whiskies and a selection of local gins.
General Stores, Gift Shops & Market
- Adventure Bay General Store: This is the main general store on the island. It stocks a wide range of groceries, fresh produce, frozen meats, and other supplies. It is also the only place on Bruny Island with a fuel station and an ATM.
- Bruny Island Chocolate Co.: Located in Adventure Bay, this is the place to go for homemade fudge, truffles, chocolate, sauces, and other gourmet foods.
- Bruny Island Honey: A local favourite, offering a variety of 100% pure Tasmanian honey, including Leatherwood, Blue Gum, and Manuka. The shop is located in Great Bay.
- Inala Gift Shop: This shop, located at Inala on Cloudy Bay Road, has a lovely selection of locally made gifts including pottery, soap and also good range of nature books and gift cards.
- Pennicott Cruise Gift Shop: Found at the Bruny Island Cruises Visitor Centre in Adventure Bay, this shop has a variety of souvenirs, from plush toys and jewellery to local books and clothing.
- Lunawanna Makers & Produce Market: A community market with a variety of products including food, local arts and crafts, and baked goods. Held at the Lunawanna Hall on the first and third Sunday of the month in summer and the third Sunday in winter.
Sightseeing & Things To do
- The Neck / Truganini Lookout: A must-visit for breathtaking views of the Bruny Island isthmus. You can also spot little penguins at sunset.
- Cape Bruny Lighthouse: An inactive lighthouse with amazing 360-degree views of the sea cliffs and sunset.
- Bruny Island Cruises: Experience the coastline and wildlife of Bruny Island with a scenic boat tour. See Australia’s highest sea cliffs, and you might even spot dolphins and albatrosses.
- Fishing & Surfing: The island offers great fishing spots for salmon, squid, and flathead, with jetties in Alonnah, Lunawanna, and Adventure Bay. Surfing enthusiasts can find waves at The Neck and Cloudy Bay.
National Parks & Bushwalks
Short Walk at Alonnah – Dray track/Sheepwash bay track, easy walk 3 km return.
Medium walks:
- Mavista Nature Walk, 30 – 40 minutes return (located at Adventure Bay via Lockleys Road)
- Truganini look out / Neck lookout (10 km long neck beach)
- Grass Point at Adventure Bay road (1.5 hours return)
- Luggaboine Circuit (1.5 hours circuit) start from light house jetty beach camping area.
Long walks:
- Fluted Cape trail in Adventure Bay, 2.5 hours returns
- Cape Queen Elizabeth, 12 km return, moderate to hard walks.
- East Cloudy Bay Head track, 12 km return about 4 hours walk (suggested for amateur adventures)
- Labillardiere Peninsula Circuit, 14 km circuit, about 5-6 hours walk. Starts from Old Jetty Road, just before Cape Bruny Lighthouse.
History & Art
- Alonnah History Room: Explore Bruny Island’s past at the old courthouse. It’s a fascinating archive of photos and documents.
- The Bligh Museum of Pacific Exploration: Discover historic artifacts, maps, and paintings from famous explorers.
- Nickers & Clay: A small studio that sells ceramic wares and classes.
