Access to Bruny Island is by car ferry, a vehicular ferry that departs from Kettering which is about a 40 minute drive south of Hobart, or an hour from the airport. The ferry ride takes about 15 minutes. Mandala is a scenic 30 to 40 minute drive from the ferry terminal at Roberts Point, through the mainly farming country on North Bruny Island, along the famous ‘Neck’ isthmus which connects to the more rugged South Bruny Island, and on to Alonnah on the west coast of the island.

Mandala is a couple of kilometers up the coast from Alonnah, accessed via a small precinct of houses and holiday shacks and a short stretch of dirt road – Matthew Flinders Drive – through coastal bushland. By foot or cycle, Mandala can also be reached along a historic ‘dray track’ which hugs the shore from Alonnah right up to Mandala’s front gateway.

Exploring The Area

Alonnah is a small quiet township with a general store; a hotel / restaurant / bottle shop, and a long stretch of sandy beach.

Further south from Alonnah towards Lunawanna is Bruny’s local premium winery and restaurant, about 10 minutes’ drive away. Then after another 20-30 minute drive south you get to the very south of the island, either branching west at Lunawanna to the Lighthouse and wonderful walks around the Labillardiere Peninsula, or branching east to the Cloudy Bay surf beach.

A 15-20 minute drive from Mandala to the east side of the island takes you to Adventure Bay, a favoured landing place for early European explorers and now a popular holiday centre with pristine beaches, a bigger general store (with fuel pumps and an in-house ATM/Cash point), and various other establishments. At the south end of Adventure Bay is the island base and departure point for the highly acclaimed Bruny Island Cruises. They take visitors on exhilarating boat tours around the cliffs and rocky islands off the southernmost tip of the island, often escorted by dolphins and albatrosses.

Back on North Bruny Island, foodies can have a Bruny made cheese platter at Bruny Island Cheese, or a feast of oysters at Get Shucked! At the right time of year – peak summer – locally grown cherries are available throughout the island, including from stalls at the Roberts Point ferry terminal so you can stock up as you arrive and again as you leave! Other treats include locally produced meats, olives, berries and preserves, meats and even chocolate.
